Remembering Sudan

An interactive screenprint that pays tribute to Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino on the planet.

"Sudan was a great ambassador for his species and will be remembered for the work he did to raise awareness globally of the plight facing not only rhinos, but also the many thousands of other species facing extinction."

Richard Vigne Chief Executive of Ol Pejeta

The Brief

  • Half a million rhinos roamed Africa and Asia in 1900. But due to poaching and habitat loss that figure had fallen to 70,000 by 1970.
  • Rhino numbers continue to dwindle to this day. Following the passing of the last male Northern White Rhino, Under the Skin partnered up with Ol Pejeta to pay tribute to this species bound for extinction.
  • We created a limited edition screenprint with 20% donated to the charity who are guarding the last two remaining female northern white rhinos on the planet.

The Idea

  • Our handprinted artwork depicts the last rhino standing next to an acacia tree (a well-known landmark on the African savanna) silhouetted against a burning orange sky.
  • In darkness the landscape scene turns to night - the sun is transformed into a blazing moon as stars light up the sky.
  • Under UV light the phosphorescent skeleton of the rhino is exposed, all that remains when a species falls into the darkness of extinction.

The result

  • So far we have sold 50 / 100 limited edition prints. That’s £1,450, halfway toward our target of £2,900.
  • One of the prints was auctioned by Ol Pejeta and Helping Rhinos in an event that raised over $100,000 in the name of rhino conservation which was hit hard in the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The campaign has been so successful that we are now planning the next piece of artwork with Ol Pejeta to raise money for critically endangered black rhinos.

Last rhino standing

Our artwork depicts a white rhino standing next to an acacia tree (a well-known landmark on the African savanna) silhouetted against a burning orange sky. We screenprinted the piece in a limited edition of 100 prints.

Prints That Protect

20% of proceeds from every print sale is donated to Ol Pejeta who are guarding the last two remaining female northern white rhinos. We printed charity cards for our customers with infographics about the species and how donations are used.
